Manu Hegde, MD, PhD
Neurologist and Epilepsy Specialist
Dr. Manu Hegde is a neurologist and epilepsy specialist who cares for adults who have seizures. He treats seizure disorders using the full spectrum of medications and is skilled at using cutting-edge imaging and neurophysiological tools that measure nervous system responses.
Hegde is experienced at guiding patients who are interested in pursuing surgery for epilepsy, including looking at the option of implantable neurostimulation devices. Committed to helping patients improve their quality of life, he takes a holistic approach that aims to do more than just control seizures.
Hegde's research focuses on finding epilepsy biomarkers, factors that might predict the effectiveness of treatment before patients actually have a seizure. He is a principal investigator for the Human Epilepsy Project, a large multicenter observational study of people with epilepsy. His other research interests include the links between epilepsy and autoimmune disease, improving mental health care for people with seizures and improving patient safety.
Hegde earned his medical degree and a doctorate in neuroscience at the University of California, Davis. He completed a residency in neurology at UCSF, serving as a chief neurology resident for Moffitt Hospital in his final year. He then completed a fellowship in epilepsy and clinical neurophysiology at UCSF before joining the faculty. He is a fellow of the American Epilepsy Society and a member of the American Academy of Neurology.
