Zian Tseng, MD
Cardiologist and electrophysiologist
Dr. Zian H. Tseng is a cardiologist and electrophysiologist (a specialist in heart rhythm abnormalities). He is an expert in determining the risk of patients prone to sudden cardiac death (SCD) and ventricular arrhythmias, which can cause SCD. He also specializes in catheter ablation of complex arrhythmias (a procedure to destroy heart tissue causing an abnormal beat), implanting defibrillators and resynchronizing heart devices, and extracting the leads or wires for heart devices (when, for example, the leads malfunction or become infected).
In the past, Tseng was awarded a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to more accurately define SCD, the conditions underlying SCD and its risk factors. He also is studying the genetics of SCD and the risk of sudden death with the use of Tasers by law enforcement agencies. In addition, he is involved with developing new devices to treat heart rhythm disorders.
A Bay Area native, Tseng completed undergraduate studies in molecular biology and biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and earned his medical degree at UCSF, where he also completed a year of graduate studies in biomedical sciences. He completed subspecialty training in internal medicine, cardiology, and cardiac electrophysiology at UCSF.
