Charles Chiu, MD, PhD, provides an overview of metagenomics next-generation sequencing (mNGS), a clinical test he and his UCSF colleagues have developed that allows millions of DNA sequences to be decoded from a single clinical sample. In a recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Chiu and colleagues demonstrated the clinical utility of the mNGS assay for diagnosis of neurological infections. Dr. Chiu discusses how mNGS testing can lead to lower health care costs, quicker and more accurate diagnosis, and more appropriate therapy for patients with neurological conditions such as meningitis and encephalitis.
